They've made out world a better place and are honored for it Thursday night.

Citizen Action of New York held it's Annual Phoenix Awards at the Binghamton Regency.

It says the Phoenix is used as a symbol to exemplify people who, in their daily lives, help make the world a better place.

This year, there were three winners, including 76-year old Billie Anderson.

For decades, a leader in the civil rights struggle, and a founder of the local NAACP chapter.

She says we've come a long way, but more needs to be done.

"There needs to be a lot done, particularly in the public schools to keep Children in there and make sure that they graduate," said Anderson.

Also receiving a Phoenix:

Bernie Levy, an English Professor at Binghamton University, and Claudia Stallman, a pioneer in environmental activism.
