Emerson Moving Forward

By WBNG News

Emerson Network Power is the anchor tenant and it plans to add new jobs.

Action News reporter Erik Burling tells us why Emerson believes the Charles Street Business Park is the right place to move.

This empty space filled with potholes, overgrown weeds, and old barrels is where Emerson Network Power plans to grow its company.

It is spending 5 to 10 million dollars to build a new facility.

"Because you know we are making this investment we have been adding jobs this year that we would have placed elsewhere in our company around the world" says Bill Fierle President of Emerson's local division.

Emerson has already added about half a dozen jobs, and says more hires could be coming.

It makes work tools, and surge protectors for household appliances like a refrigerator or television.

The Broome County Industrial Development agency says Emerson offers high-paying technology and manufacturing jobs.

The ideal fit for new Charles Street Business Park.

"I can't you know if I could do back flips, and you could catch it on TV I would do it. But, quite frankly Emerson is a world class company," says Richard D'Attilio

Emerson expects to move into its new facility here early in 2009.

It will sell its current location on Water Street.

New York State invested a million dollars to ensure Emerson play a part in upstate's economic renaissance.

"It all came together at the right time. Our focus on development, and a companies need to expand. And a company that had options to go elsewhere" says Dan Gunderson chair of the Upstate Empire State Development.

But Emerson wanted to remain in Binghamton, and hold on to its top of the line work force.

"Sometimes people see that it's best days has been in the past, but I actually see a brighter future than ever" says Fierle.

A future with more jobs, and more businesses on a site that has sat empty since the start of this decade.
