Celebrating Independence In Montrose

By WBNG News

The 4th of July starts with parades and picnics and ends with fireworks around the Twin TIers.

Those traditions bring thousands to Montrose every year.

Everyone here has one thing in common.

A love for their country.

Veterans walk with their nation's flag held high.

Young or old, it's a day filled with patriotic pride.

"It's just the energy, so many people come out, coming out here it's just a day to celebrate the Fourth of July" said Ryan Fortier of Vestal.

"We always come to the parade this is how we celebrate the Fourth of July," said Vicki Drake of Montrose.

The Susquehanna County Volunteer Firefighters were recognized as honorary Grand Marshals.

"Volunteer firefighters are on call 24 hours a day and they do a great job. It's a need for the community" said Ken Fortier of Vestal.

"Actually they are brave, which I call them the Montrose bravest."

On this Independence Day, people lining the parade route reflect on our nations ideals.

"To wish everyone happiness for the year, and be glad that we are here and free, and able to speak and say things that we like and do things that we want to do," said Claraa Ward of Montrose.

"It means freedom for us, just something that no one can really take away from us" said Ryan Fortier of Vestal.

Which comes from the service of many men and women who are fighting for freedom overseas.

"It just makes me feel good to know that there are people out there who care about other people" said Clara Ward of Montrose.

And are willing to sacrifice their lives so celebrations like this one carry on year after year.
