Protesting Wegmans' Eggs

By Gabe Osterhout

An animal rights group brought its campaign against Wegmans brand eggs to the store in Johnson City.

Compassionate Consumers wants the company to stop caging hens at its farm in Wolcott.

It says video taken at the farm shows birds unable to move and suffering from beak trimming.

"They can't spread their wings comfortably. They're living with their own feces, rotting corpses and all we're asking Wegmans to do is to transition to a cage free system," said Nicole Matthews of Compassionate Consumers.

A Wegmans spokesperson says the group makes many false statements about what's seen in the video.

It also believes some video is actually from other farms.

Wegmans says it follows recommendations by the United Egg Producers and Cornell University to raise healthy hens.
