Running For An Officer

By WBNG News

The community races to remember a fallen police officer.

Old, young, men and women lined up for the 13th Annual Lee Barta Run.

Racers criss-crossed Recreation Park in Binghamton while honoring Lee Barta.

Barta was a Binghamton Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty.

For athletes, and volunteers it's a race worth running.

"It's a very good cause. It's good to recognize good citizens of the United States," said Juan Martinez, a runner from Syracuse.

"To support Lee's memory both running and volunteers, with the heat they had today we've had volunteers here two days now. Making sure the race is safe there's enough water. Things like that," said Pat Brady, The Barta Run Event Organizer.

Juan Martinez of Syracuse finished first in the 5K race.

Proceeds from the race will benefit Binghamton, Union-Endicott and Susquehanna Valley High-School's Scholarship Fund.
