Man Shot By Police Remains in Coma

New York State Police are releasing new information about what led to the shooting of 20 year old Franller Villanueva of Endicott.

They also say the man has a criminal history.

As Franller Villaneuva lies in a coma at Wilson Hospital, State Police are left without an answer to a crucial question.

"Point his handgun at a New York State Trooper, a loaded handgun. Why would he do that? Sure, that's all something we want to find out, but ya know, until his health condition improves, we're sort of at a standstill." says Major Kevin G. Molinar, New York State Police Commander.

State Police do say Villanueva is wanted in Ulster County for failure to appear in court on a drug charge.

Around 2:30 am Saturday, Endicott and State Police responded to reports of a man with a gun.

They say Villanueva fled from Washington Avenue to his home on Jefferson Avenue.

When he pointed his gun, State Police say trooper Michael J. Woytach fired 6 rounds.

Villenueva was hit 3 times in the calf, thigh and upper shoulder.

"We have a number of other investigative leads that we have to follow up on. Ya know, the source of the weapon is certainly important. How did he come in possession of that weapon?" says Molinari.

The investigation reveals Villanueva did not legally own the gun he carried.

It was not reported stolen or registered in New York.

State Police determined Trooper Woytach followed protocol.

He's back at work and back patrolling the streets.
