Downpour after downpour deluges Delaware County.

Evacuations are taking place tonight around Andes and Colchester.

Also, Route 17 EAST is closed at the Delaware-Sullivan County line due to flash flooding.

At least a dozen other roads are closed and Emergency Services is asking people not to travel.

Action News was in Delaware County earlier as people and emergency responders prepared.

Muddy waters race down the Delaware River in Walton.

People brace in case banks of feeder streams and creeks break and run onto local roads.

"It takes very little amount of water to move a vehicle {CUT} So anytime you have fast moving flash flood type water it certainly could present a hazardous condition for people" said Rich Bell, Director of Delaware County Emergency Services.

Department of Public Works in standby mode this morning.

People in Walton understand the devastation flooding can bring.

"You have a little extra food in the house in case somebody else needs help," said AnneVerrill of Walton.

"I'm going to look out my kitchen window at the brook and see how high it is, when it gets up 10 feet, then it will be in my yard and I'll take off," said Barbara Smith, of Walton.

It takes people back two years...

When ripped through Walton.

"It's a lot different now, every time it rains you think 'oh my god is it going to happen again?' So you kind of have to live with it but you kind of prepare for it," said James Haggerty of Walton.

To prevent flooding...

The federal government has given Delaware County 16 million dollars.

6 million went into Walton.

"We never want to go through that again. We've done a lot of work to keep banks secure, and get it to the rivers and streams stay within their banks," said John Meredith, Town of Walton Supervisor.
