Capping the Tax Growth

Capping the Tax Growth

By WBNG News

New York's local property taxes are 79 percent higher than the national average.

That's according to Thomas Suozzi, the Chairman of the State Commission on Property Tax Relief.

He spoke to members of the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce at the Binghamton Club.

The State Senate passed a 4 percent cap on school property tax increases.

Suozzi says its time to get the Assembly on board.

"We need our elected officials to recognize that people are suffering under the burden of their property taxes. And if they don't like this solution, they need to come up with another solution that's going to give people some relief." says Suozzi.

The Executive Director of the Fiscal Policy Institute will outline an alternative plan on Friday.

A Siena College poll released in June shows that 79 percent of Upstate New Yorkers favor a tax cap.
