You often hear about people going green, whether it's driving a hybrid car or eating organic food.

But have you ever heard of a green living community?

One family in Tompkins County is looking to help grow one such village in Tompkins County.

White Hawk Ecovillage is the first of its kind in Danby.

It's a community based on green building and sustainability.

"It's like wow. We're really living here. It's becoming a village," said Laura Woinoski of White Hawk Ecovillage.

Laura and Stephen Woinoski and their twin daughters now call White Hawk...home.

They're the first family to make the move.

The Woinoski's paid 125 thousand dollars for their house.

In return, they're getting 12 hundred square feet of space.

"There's room everywhere. There's lots of storage. It's amazing how simple and efficient the design is," said Laura Woinoski.

White Hawk is centered around 3 priorities.

Using non-toxic materials, buying local products and being energy-efficient.

The Woinoski's house was built using passive solar design, meaning sunlight can provide heat and reduce energy bills.

"We have a balance between nature and man. We respect each other and respect the land, and move forward to live a more green life."

White Hawk will be a cooperative community.

The Woinoski's plan to grow some of their own food.

When other families move in, they hope to trade produce and other materials.

"You don't have to go out and buy all these energy-saving, money-saving and green products because you can just walk next door and say 'hey can I borrow this for the day?'" said Stephen Woinoski of White Hawk Ecovillage.

30 homes will be built at White Hawk Ecovillage.

7 of them have already been reserved.

White Hawk Ecovillage covers 120 acres.

It sits off Route 96B, outside of Ithaca, in Tompkins County
