Wagner's Closing Auction

Wagner's Closing Auction

By WBNG News

Dozens of people come to Binghamton, looking to buy a piece of a well known bakery.

Wagner's Bakery on Seminary Avenue closed it's doors for good at the end of July.

Today, the bakery auctioned off everything inside.

Action News reporter Gabe Osterhout has the story.

"This was a special place," says Bill Waffle of Johnson City.

That's how many people remember Wagner's Bakery in Binghamton.

It closed it's doors for good at the end of July, after more than 30 years in business.

People from all over the Northeast came to the store for an auction.

"Nothing specific that we're looking for. We're just trying to see what's available and take it from there," says David Cleary of Elmira.

Some came to buy, some just came to look inside the bakery they came to as kids one last time.

Bill Waffle remembers coming in for a treat.

"Pastries, when you're a kid, pastries were it and it was a few years ago. Nostalgia is what brings me back today," says Waffle.

Christina Penny works for the auction company selling off everything inside the store.

From cookie cutters, to baking sheets, heavy duty mixers, to ovens, everything had to go.

"As a kid, my brothers used to come in here. We used to come in here and buy cookies and stuff on our way to school or after school, stop and pick up bread. It's just a shame to see a business like this go," says Penny.

The Wagners say high taxes, high food costs and high utilities drove them to close the store.

A move that affected hundreds of people.

"They're all sad. We get letters, we've got bags full saying how sorry they are ya know, but if they would have come everyday, this wouldn't have happened," says Clifford Wagner.

Now that Wagners is gone, people want to visit one last time, and take home something that reminds them of their childhood.

"SOLD!"

In Binghamton, Gabe Osterhout, WBNG-TV Action News.

Colonial Al Benjamin and Company Auctioneers and Appraisers conducted today's auction.

Everything was sold as is.

Wagner says his family is leaving the area and have no plans of continuing in the bakery business.
