Yielding to Safety

People driving into Bainbridge have traveled through a new roundabout for about a year.

Action News reporter Reed Buterbaugh tells us why the town is celebrating it now.

When drivers come off Interstate 88 and enter the Town of Bainbridge they should observe some newer rules of the road.

"The idea here is when you're coming to the circle you have to slow down," Bainbridge Town Supervisor Rick Chase said.

A flag raising ceremony signaled the completion of a two year roundabout project on Route 206.

"The locals have been wanting to do something here. We've had a lot of accidents," said Thomas Libous,(R) 52nd District, New York State Senate. They talked about putting a red light up and they came together and it's a great project."

"It's been tremendous. The flow of traffic is very smooth through here. Large, small, whatever," Chase said.

Chase says so far, there have not been any crashes.

Libous has been on the State Senate transportation committee for years.

He says other roundabouts in the region have cut collisions in half.

They also cut down on stop and go driving, which improves a car's fuel economy.

Libous says traffic circles could sprout up through out New York.

"I think the roundabout is going to be more efficient especially with fuel costs today and it's just going to make a lot of sense," Libous said,

But not all reviews for the roundabout are positive.

"It's different that's for sure," said Brian Merrick of Bainbridge. "I think we ought to just put an intersection in there with a light. It's kind of complicated to get through if you don't know what you're doing."

"I'm used to it now but it is a change you know there aren't a lot of traffic circles on these roads," said Sandy Jenkins.

And there could be more changes to come.

During construction, sewer and electric lines were put down for potential development outside the roundabout.

The project cost five million dollars, with 80 percent of the funding coming from the federal government.
