Small Tax Increase

By WBNG News

Taxes will go up in Conklin but any tax rate increase is not expected to be significant.

That's according to Supervisor Debbie Preston, who is currently working on the 2009 budget.

She expects spending to increase by only 60-thousand dollars from the current year.

Due to the June 2006 flood, Conklin lost 7-million dollars in assessed value.

That combined with the nations recent economic downturn, led the town to make some tough decisions.

Preston hoped 2009 would have been different.

"2009 was actually suppose to be the year we were coming out of it," said Town Supervisor Debbie Preston. "And our homes were going to be reaccessed and we would gain more assessment value, which we did. Then we got hit by the oil crisis and everything going skyrocketing so we just tighten our belts."

Preston is not expecting any state aid and is adjusting the budget accordingly.
