Hancock Landowners Want Fair Deal

By WBNG News

Some landowners in Delaware County say they were taken advantage of by natural gas companies and plan to file a lawsuit.

About four years ago, these people signed leases for as little as five dollars, to 200 dollars an acre.

This was before Marcellus Scale, which is rich in natural gas, was discovered below their land.

Now, some landowners in the Twin Tiers are signing leases for as much as 2,400 dollars an acre.

These people hope the threat of a lawsuit will give them a fair deal.

"They told us the chance of them actually coming here and drilling would be approximately 1 in 100 and that if we didn't sign to get on board they would just suck the gas from underneath our land and we wouldn't get paid anything," said Walter Neville of Greene.

"What we're trying to do is see if we can rectify it so there are people here that felt they were told if they don't sign they'll never get gas money," said Rudolph Weber of Deposit. "They'll never get this a lot of things were happening from representatives that were trying to get in here really quick and cheap."

The landowners also say they were told 12.5% royalities was the highest they were legally allowed to receive.

Their lawyers say 12.5 is actually the minimum required by law.

Multiple natural gas companies would be involved in the lawsuit, including Goodrich Petroleum and Chesapeake Energy.
