Marine One On Schedule

By WBNG News

The next fleet of Presidential helicopters should remain on schedule, as long as the federal government isn't slow to pay for it. That's according to Congressman Maurice Hinchey.

Lockheed Martin and it's partners are building the fleet of Marine One helicopters.

Hinchey says the first phase, which includes about 8 helicopters, is nearly complete.

But, the Democrat says talks have begun in Washington of making cuts to the federal budget, to help ease the nation's deficit.

He says consistent funding of phase two is now a priority for a number of reasons.

"delays in the production of these helicopters is going to raise the cost, make it more expensive. And the fact that the existing set of helicopters which continue to be in use are declining in safety and security," said Congressman Hinchey.

The Presidential Fleet will consists of 27 Marine One helicopters and is expected to fly the President by next year.

Hinchey is seeking re-election this November against Republican George Phillips.
