Windstorm Cleanup

By WBNG News

Winds punched through upstate overnight, leaving more than 100-thousand people across upstate without power this morning.

In the Southern Tier, areas of Elmira and Ithaca were among the hardest hit.

Action News Reporter Julianne Sweeney shows us how people are cleaning up the mess left behind.

This tree crew is collecting branches and limbs blown into the road in Ithaca.

The half dozen workers were called in at 3:00 am.

"We've got a great crew. They've got many decades of experience doing this. They're used to working around power lines and trees." says Andy Hillman a City of Ithaca Forester.

A windstorm with gusts of winds reaching more than 50-mph, hit the city shortly before midnight.

"Winds were so strong, it knocked down part of this tree that landed on the roof of this car parked on Columbia Street in the City of Ithaca." says Action News Reporter Julianne Sweeney.

The car belongs to Sam Cohen-Shikora, an Ithaca College junior.

He's taking pictures, so he can file an insurance claim.

"I had just taken my car in to, ya know, get serviced because I've been having troubles. So in the past week and a half, I've had all the bad luck with it." says Cohen-Shikora.

Downed power lines were also a problem.

This one was found lying in a driveway on Hook Place.

Overnight, 35-hundred homes in Ithaca were without power.

Despite the interruption, the city is thankful it didn't experience more severe damage.

"We've been pretty lucky here in Ithaca too. We've dodged a bullet many times. Ice storms, big windstorms." says Hillman.

But this windstorm was big enough to keep Hillman's crew working through the day.
