Lockheed Martin's Project Lifts Off

By WBNG News

The next Presidential helicopter takes flight.

This is a picture of the VH-71 during it's 40-minute maiden voyage in England.

Lockheed Martin won a contract in 2005 to build the new fleet of Marine One helicopters.

It is the prime contractor and systems integrator.

Lockheed's partner, Augusta Westland, based in England, is responsible for its design.

Project leaders say the VH-71 performed "exceptionally" today.

The U.S. Air Force will transport the helicopter to Maryland early next month.

This aircraft is part of the first phase of the project, which includes 5 helicopters.

The Presidential Fleet will consist of 28 Marine One helicopters, and is expected to fly the next President next year.
