Town of Lisle, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The New York State Police investigated a tractor-trailer fire on Interstate 81 in the Town of Lisle that occurred on the shoulder of the northbound lanes just before 8:00 p.m. Monday.

Police responded to the scene, just south of the Cortland County line, to find the vehicle completely engulfed in flames.

The driver of the vehicle, Clarence Phelps, 56, of Watertown, saw flames coming from the passenger side of the vehicle. He pulled to the shoulder of the road and attempted to extinguish the fire, but was unsuccessful.

The Marathon Fire Department responded and put out the fire.

Thirty horses, being transported from Shippensburg, Pennsylvania to a rendering plant in Massueville, Quebec died in the fire.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire started after a passenger side fuel tank malfunctioned.

The New York State Department of Transportation and Broome County Sheriff’s Office also assisted the State Police at the scene.
