Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The adoption center at Petco in Johnson City celebrated its one year anniversary Sunday.

Since it opened a year ago, the center has matched 300 pets to loving families. It hit 301 during the anniversary celebration.

A rescue group called Every Dog's Dream Rescue runs the center, and does so for free.

"Everyone who comes in is a volunteer," Audrey Woerter, founder and owner of Every Dog's Dream Rescue, said. "They come in and they clean cat boxes, they're cleaning a lot of dog poop off the floors."

Many of the dogs and cats come from high-kill shelters down South, where Woerter says the spaying and neutering programs are not as good as they are in New York. The adoption center spays and neuters all the pets before finding families to adopt them.

"It's all worth it when you have these guys in the group," Woerter said, cradling a brown and white puppy in her arms.

The center currently has five puppies and a few kittens up for adoption.
