Vestal Says Racial Slur a Misunderstanding

Vestal Says Racial Slur a Misunderstanding

By WBNG News

The Vestal School District says it was a simple misunderstanding that led Horseheads High School to forfeiting a girls junior varsity soccer game last weekend.
The incident happened on Saturday at Dick Hoover Stadium in Vestal.
Early in the second half of the game, the Horseheads coach pulled her team from the field and forfeit.
Horseheads Superintendent Ralph Marino Junior says part of the issue were derogatory remarks made on and off the field.
But Vestal Superintendent Mark Capibianco says reports of alleged racial and anti-semitic slurs at the game, were the result of a misunderstanding.
"As information was gathered, it was revealed that 2 of the Vestal Soccer players have nicknames that are used by their friends and family to cheer them on during their soccer matches."
Those nicknames are Megars and Jules.
Capibianco says he would like to send a delegation of players, coaches and staff to Horseheads to discuss the incident with them.
The Southern Tier Athletic Conference or STAC expects to review reports from both schools at it's meeting next week.
