Sigh of Relief

By WBNG News

Today's special session in Albany left school districts relieved.

As lawmakers agreed not to make mid-year cuts to education funding.

The Binghamton School District has been bracing for such cuts.

Back in October, it issued a hiring freeze and started approaching principals and department heads, asking where they could cut.

But the district isn't out of the woods yet.

"Cuts to us have a lot more impact than they do on higher wealth districts. If they could give us some additional flexibility, some mandate relief. We believe we can absorb that depending on the size of the cuts and still maintaining good programs for our children," said President of the Board of Education, David Hawley.

Hawley says the board is already anticipating and preparing for less funding from the state next year.
