Changes at Polls

By WBNG News

The Binghamton school board looks to make some changes at the polls.

It wants to eliminate 5 polling places.

And reduce the number of hours polling places are open, from 14 to 9 hours.

They cite low voter turnout at certain schools.

Board Member Brian Whalen says only 4 percent of eligible voters take to the polls for school budget approval.

"It was based on where people vote, continuing to have, if you look at how the 8 districts, polling places are arranged there are almost 2 on each side of town," said Whalen.

The board is also considering going to paper ballots.

Whalen says all these changes could cut voting costs by more than 50-percent.

The board will vote on the proposals December 16th.
