A Binghamton couple gives the largest donation ever, in the history of Le Moyne College.

Robert and Catherine Mcdevitt were long-time friends of the college.

The two died this year, but left the college a very special gift.

50 million dollars, which more than doubles the college's endowment.

Jon Dougherty has more.

The buzz on the campus of Le Moyne college is about the kindness of people most of the students never met - or even heard of.

It's going to bring a lot of news about Le Moyne to the Syracuse are, and the Northeast about the college, so I think it's a great thing." says Freshman Andy Gleason.

Robert and Catherine Mcdevitt never attended Le Moyne college, but one of the biggest donations ever to a jesuit college is now in their names.

"The impact is powerful, and it will allow us to become one of the best colleges of our type in the country." Says Le Moyne College President Dr. Fred Pestello.

Robert Mcdevitt owned and operated Mcdevitt brothers funeral home in Binghamton...although a successful business...the $50-million dollar fortune didn't come from it.

Mcdevitt's mother was the secretary to A. Ward Ford, the founding president of IBM.

When his mother died, Mcdevitt inherited her shares, and then spent 70 years accumulating more.

"It will help us retain and attract outstanding faculty, will continue to make affordable for students, and it's just going to be a transformational gift on every level." says Pestello.

The money will go to four academic area's at Le Moyne college: computer science, information processing, physics, and religious philosophy.

Robert Mcdevitt's cousin, Reverend Edward Mcdevitt helped start the physics department when the college was founded 62 year's ago in 1946.

It will also help keep down the cost of tuition and students hope the money will put their college on the national map.
