Turkey Day Traveling

There will be fewer flights taking off from the Greater Binghamton Airport this Thanksgiving week.

And, slightly fewer drivers hitting the highways.

Action News reporter Erik Burling tells us many people are looking into alternative options.

College students cram the Shortline bus terminal in Binghamton.

They're heading home for Thanksgiving.

"That is my only means of transportation. And it's not that expensive and it's not that bad," said Candace Seely, a college student.

"It's at most 40 dollars one way," said Josephine LaPietra, a college student.

AAA estimates 41 million people are expected to follow suit, and travel one way or another, this Thanksgiving.

That's a 1% decrease from last year.

"Of the people who are traveling more than 80 percent are traveling by car. So, there are still 33 million people who will be traveling and the roads will be crowded as always," said Richard Jacobs, President of Southern New York AAA.

Also crowded, will be airports and airplanes.

To offset high fuel price airlines are cutting flights.

Each airline at the Greater Binghamton Airport eliminated one round trip flight Thanksgiving day.

Flights will remain steady for the rush, before and after the holiday.

"I think with the capacity cuts that the airlines have done this year it will be just as full as it always has been," said Carl Beardsley, Commissioner of the Greater Binghamton Airport.

"With gasoline prices on the decline many people are relying on rental cars to do their holiday traveling. Jim Spear's Auto Sales here in Binghamton says it's seen a recent increase in rental demand," said Action News reporter Erik Burling.

"People are grouping together and trying to, ya know, save some money and make a trip and rent one vehicle oppose to taking two or three cars," said Deborah Spears, Spear's Auto Sales.

Save money, but still make the traditional trip for the most traveled holiday, Thanksgiving.

AAA says weather is a large factor in determining holiday travel.

It also says Thanksgiving is most traveled because the holiday weekend is compressed, lasting from Wednesday to Sunday.

Opposed to an entire week for other holidays.
