Broome County Stop DWI Coordinator James May was named Citizen of the Year last evening at the American Legion Post 80 recognition dinner. May has served as the county’s STOP DWI coordinator since 1983 and is the founder of the Chris Thater Memorial, an event held in honor of his friend who was killed by a drunk driver and of the STOP-DWI Holiday Classic, one of the top high school boys invitational basketball tournaments in the United States.

Before receiving his award, May was introduced by Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala “Without the vision and dedicated efforts of this evening’s honoree we would not have one of the most recognized STOP DWI programs in NY State,” said Fiala. “Most importantly, we would not be seeing the decline of DWI accidents and fatalities in our community.”

Through Jim’s efforts there is greater community awareness of the consequences associated with driving while under the influence. May currently serves as Chairman of the STOP-DWI Association of New York that represents New York’s 62 county STOP-DWI Programs.
