Paterson to accept report on property tax relief

NY gov to accept report on property tax relief
Gov. David Paterson is slated to accept a
final report on cutting property taxes in New York state.
The state Commission on Property Tax Relief was formed to
address New York's local property taxes, which are the highest in
the nation. A preliminary commission report called for capping
local school taxes at either 4 percent or 120 percent of inflation,
whichever is less. That would be about half of the annual average
growth in most recent years.
That recommendation, issued in June, fell flat when the Assembly
passed a different tax control measure than the one pushed by
Paterson and the Republican-led Senate.
The issue has pitted the Democratic governor against the
powerful statewide teachers' union.
