Binghamton City Council proposes a law aimed at protecting transgender people from discrimination.

It would protect people from discrimination based on sexual orientation, sexual identity, weight and height.

State and federal law includes protections against several forms of discrimination like age, race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, disability, marital status, sex, and sexual orientation.

The city is looking to include more protections against discrimination based on a persons gender expression or identity and size.

"It's very important for Binghamton as a community to take a stand on this and say look we as a community also agree. We know that we're bound by law. We agree that discrimination is a bad thing. It's bad for our community," said Councilman Sean Massey.

"It's not about tolerance it's about acceptance and respect. What if we really lived in a world like that? Binghamton could create a tone like that, that would set a precedent like that. I would be very honored and happy," said Diane Wiener, who is trans gender.

During public comment, several people spoke up about extending the law to protect those who had been incarcerated.
