Learning, Without Going To Class

By WBNG News

Yesterday was fall semester graduation at Binghamton University.

And about 20 students graduated, without ever stepping into a B-U classroom.

Action News Reporter Landon Sears tells us how.

Eric Li got his Master's degree in engineering from B-U this past weekend.

Graduation day was the first time he was ever in Binghamton.

"I do the same homework, take the same tests, and do the same projects."

But all of the school work he did was...

"100 percent online."

Lee took courses online as part of the EngiNet distance-learning program.

It's part of the school's engineering department.

The EngiNet system is simple to use.

The professor gives his lecture.

The lecture is captured by a camera.

And then it's posted digitally online so students can watch the lecture on their computer screens any time they want.

Walter Land was one of Jason's professors.

"Generally my off-site students do extremely well. A little bit better on average than the on-site students." says Land.

The program has been around since 1995.

EngiNet has worked on bringing students closer together over the years.

"It used to be we would get complaints about not being able to get in touch with professors but we don't have that problem any more because we provide a 1-800 number to the students." said EngiNet Coordinator Janice Kinzer.

"I did a project with my classmate on a conference call system. So, everything is pretty flexible."said Li

200 students like Jason have graduated from B-U through EngiNet.

"I think the online program will be the future in this century." said Li.

He hopes having a master's in engineering will allow him to advance in engineering and help him earn more money.

EngiNet was ranked 10th out of 216 Graduate Engineering distance learning programs in the fall issue of Online Degrees magazine.
