Harpursville Senior to Witness History

By WBNG News

Millions are expected to head to Washington D.C. for the swearing in of President-Elect Barack Obama.

While most of the world will watch it on television, one Harpursville High School senior will be there to witness that historic moment.

Action News Reporter Reed Buterbaugh has the story.

Last April, Emily Sullivan of Harpursville went to the nation's capital for a youth leadership conference.

Alumni from the event were invited to the presidential inauguration.

Now she's trying to figure out what dress to wear for black tie events on the 20th.

"I was really excited to be invited to something so historical either way whoever won it was going to a first woman in office or a black man," Sullivan said.

"I was overwhelmed first of all and I couldn't believe that she had the opportunity," said Kathi Murphy, Sullivan's mother. "So I took a couple of days to hesitate and when I did she was first on the waiting list. Well she didn't talk to me for a few days."

Sullivan wouldn't stay on the waiting list long, and found out late last spring she'd be attending the inauguration.

At just 17, she was too young to vote.

But says she's happy the Democratic Senator won.

"A lot of my friends were pretty into the whole campaign and everything a lot of them are pretty jealous and excited for me a lot of teachers are excited," Sullivan said.

"I was excited for her. It's weird you know you don't really hear a lot of people that are going and I didn't know that they invited students of anything," said Kara Shierly, Sullivan's friend.

Sullivan has already bought a new camera to make sure she captures all the moments from her week in Washington.

Her friends and family are excited to relive the pictures from the historic event.

"She's going to look back on this and it's going to be the opportunity of a lifetime," Murphy said. "I mean there's not going to be that many kids that can say they actually went to such a historical swearing in of the new president."

Sullivan is sure she'll have plenty of stories and memories to share with her mother.

Sullivan's mother will drop her off in Washington D.C. next Friday.

She won't be able to stay with her daughter for the whole week, because hotel rooms are booked up for the week.
