Staying Connected In Downtown Binghamton

By WBNG News

You can now hop online at more places thanks to a stronger wireless signal in downtown Binghamton

Action News Reporter Caitlin Nuclo tells us how the upgrades are attracting new businesses, to log on.

More businesses in Downtown Binghamton are logging on to the city's free wireless internet, helping to keep their patrons connected.

"We think that WiFi is a great addition to our business. Most of our clientele are business people, students who on their lunch break would like to relax and come and eat and continue their work," said Elpiniki Karvounis.

City leaders announced upgrades today at Despina's Mediterranean Taste on Washington Street.

The city has expanded it's WiFi service to parts of South Washington Street, to include the South Bridge Commercial District.

And also increased it's signal strength in places where it's used the most, like Court Street.

"It's much more likely that if you turn on your computer anywhere downtown your going to get a strong signal," said Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan.

A strong signal, that could equal strong business.

"I think a lot of the business people and the students will take advantage of that," said Karvounis.

Which is why Despina's got hooked up.

It's hoping free WiFi will bring more people in, to log on.

"I do believe it will bring in some new business," said Karvounis.

"A business that takes us on will actually increase their ability to bring young people in to have lunch and continue their work on their computers," said Ryan.

People like Eric Guilfoos who works next door.

"They've got good food and you can come over here and continue to work while you're eating so I think it's a great thing," said Guilfoos.

The city says usage has increased 77 percent since the service was introduced 8 months ago.
