Route 12 Safety Improvements Coming Soon

By Kiersten Mathieu

The roar of Route 12 traffic keeps one Town of Chenango family awake and uneasy.

"We're afraid sometimes to go out our driveway. You know, there's no cars. The next thing you know, here comes a car down the road. Flying," says Peggy Iacovazzi of Chenango.

Traffic studies reported more than a thousand car accidents along Route 12 from 1998 to 2001.

And that number hasn't changed.

Just Monday, a car was totaled.

"There's no fix to the front of my car," says Barbara Parvin of Chenango Forks.

Parvin crashed on Route 12, when another car made a last minute decision to turn.

"A lot of people drive so fast on this road, that you just don't know when they're going to turn," says Parvin.

The New York State Department of Transportation has federal funding to add turning lanes, widen the road and install traffic signals.

New York State is adding millions more to allow these safety projects to start next year.

"Because of the resources, we had the benefit of being able to add a number of turning lanes, bi-directional right and left lanes throughout this project," says NYS DOT Regional Director Jack Williams.

Improvements to Route 12 are the cherries on top for an ice cream shop in Greene.

"It can be a little scary at parts. And I think any improvements would greatly enhance the route," says Tim Gell of Genegantslet Ice Cream Barn.

The DOT will focus the first improvement projects in the Town of Chenango, Chenango Forks and Greene, to make route 12 a little safer for everyone.

The DOT will host an informational meeting about the safety upgrades on Route 12, on Thursday, October 5th from 4:30 to 8:30 in the Town of Chenango Hall.
