Autism Home Program

By WBNG News

Broome Developmental Services makes its case for a group home for autistic children in Broome County.

The group home would be here atop Prescott Avenue in Endicott.

It's one of four planned youth homes in the state geared towards helping those with autism.

Critics at a Town of Union board meeting say a group home would actually hinder their development.

BDS says its program would provide excellent care, and families of autistic children want this option.

"In this particular situation we believe it's beneficial for the youths to be together because they can interact with each other in a positive manner and not mimic as you say negative behavior," said Carl Letson Jr. Director of Broome Developmental Services.

The home would cost the state 800-thousand dollars a year to operate and create 28 jobs.
