Binghamton University Disaster Drill

By WBNG News

Students at Binghamton University prepare for the worst today.

The school of nursing hosted a disaster drill on campus.

Action News reporter Gabe Osterhout shows us how it all played out.

The Events Center at Binghamton University transformed into a hospital.

A mock propane explosion on campus was followed by a diesel explosion.

90 people were injured both on campus and the neighboring area.

That was the scenario that started today's disaster drill.

"Some students are assigned roles as patients, others are assigned as the crazy person that you didn't even know. So you might see a person going ballistic and some other student nurses having to take them down. We're playing this exactly the way it would happen," says senior B.U. nursing student Alexandra Karlgut.

Some students had to be decontaminated in a booth outside the Event's Center.

Others were brought in by ambulance with a varying degree of injuries.

"These are bachelors prepared nurses so they're going to be ready when they get into the field to be able to handle emergencies, patients that are seriously injured, mass causality incidences," says Margaret Contro of the Decker School of Nursing.

Student nurses were broken down into several sections, from the intensive care unit, to the burn unit, to helping people with mental health issues.

And they're taught a chain of command, in case they need help during a disaster.

"It's very important for us students to know how to effectively communicate and in a disaster, that is the most important thing," Karlgut says.

While this is a drill, the students still took it very seriously.

Nurses not only learn what to do technically in an emergency, but also how to deal with people emotionally.

Disaster drill training is a requirement for all senior nursing students at the Decker School of Nursing.

Outside agencies like the Broome County Hazmat team, Vestal Ambulance Service and American Red Cross also took part.
