Growing crops for fuel, not food, is the goal of new research at Cornell University.

The university opened the new bio-fuels Research laboratory on the campus in Ithaca.

Here, biologists, environmental engineers and other scientists will research renewable energy.

Their focus will be on developing and producing bio-fuels from plants.

Cornell says they show better promise than fuels like ethanol made from corn.

The university has positioned itself to be the premier school for bio-fuel research.

"We can do everything from size reduction to fermentation," said Larry Walker, a Cornell biology professor. "We can do basic and applied research. We can diversify the portfolio of technology that we bring to bare in bio-fuels."

Development would not affect food prices.

And the plant sources can be grown on land that might otherwise be unused.

The lab cost six million dollars.
