Paterson, Fiala Call on Senators To Act

By WBNG News

New York's Governor says all 62 New York Senators are expected in the chamber for a special session tonight.

David Paterson says if they don't act, companies, counties, and schools will loose.

The Power for Jobs program will expire, federal stimulus money will be lost and half of the state's counties are waiting for approval to extend sales tax.

Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala is also the President of the County Executives Association.

She gathered with leaders around the state to call on the State Senate to stop its power squabbles.

"Enough of not working together. Enough of taking the easy way out just by gaveling in and out of session, and enough of not doing the job the people elected you to do," said Fiala.

While Democrats met for a court ordered session, the Republican block is appealing.

One republican senator appears to have walked in the chamber while Democrats were voting on bills.

There are questions about whether his action constitutes a quorum needed to pass legislation.

Governor Paterson says he will withhold senators pay, travel vouchers and member item spending until they finish work on non-controversial bills.
