Flying With The Blue Angels

By WBNG News

A lucky few experience the aviation action ahead of the Greater Binghamton Air Show.

The Blue Angels Team is the headline performance this weekend.

As Action News reporter Leigh Dana tells us, 3 people took a tour and flight they'll never forget.

Jets like this don't often take off and land at the Greater Binghamton Airport.

And not just anyone gets a chance to soar more than a hundred miles an hour at about 15 thousand feet in the air.

Binghamton University President, Lois Defleur is one of 3 people who picked to spread their wings and fly with the Blue Angels.

On this, a US Navy #7 F 18 Hornet.

"It was really unbelievable," exclaims DeFleur.

DeFleur is no novice at flying.

She's piloted planes before.

But Maine Endwell teacher, Robert Maraski and Bmet's Connor Gates have only been passengers.

Gates says, "One time I did fly first class."

"So where's the farthest that you've flown?"

Robert Maraski replies, "Uh, that I can remember, to California., about a 5 hour ride that's about it."

"Okay, so this is a little different for you?"

"Yes, this is much different."

And some of the things that the crew chief touched base on while the passengers are in motion are to keep your head back, feet flexed and say hick every 3 to 5 seconds.

"I didn't have my head back like they told me and all of a sudden...woah," comments Lois Defleur.

Blue Angel pilots do these things to maintain a great lower body strength.

That way, they can do cool moves like these.

"Pull anywhere from 3 Gs, which makes you feel like your hanging from the ceiling or positive 7 and a half Gs which makes you feel like 7x your body weight, says Blue Angel Lieutenant Ben Abourn.

A sensation that these 3 in Broome County will remember for a lifetime.

The F-18 used for today's flights won't be part of the air show.

But it did perform some of the moves you'll see in the sky this weekend.

The Greater Binghamton Air Show is Saturday and Sunday, 10 - 4 both days at the Greater Binghamton Airport
