Green Car Wash

By WBNG News

A Binghamton man is building a car wash that recycles.

Reusing water to cut down on what it draws and returns through the city water system.

Action News reporter Gabe Osterhout tells us how it will work.

Construction has started on a unique car wash on Conklin Avenue.

When finished, it will look much like this one on Upper Front Street, but it won't work the same.

Joe Conaty is building a state of the art car wash that will be environmentally friendly.

Instead of dirty, soapy water going to the Joint Sewage Treatment plant, the water will be cleaned along with the cars.

"I will capture the run-off. I will clean the water to pretty stringent levels then keep re-using that water and replenishing with fresh water as well so the water quality will not be degraded," Conaty says.

It will also use a geothermal heating system.

Water drawn in for cleaning is heated.

But chilled water will return through another well, making this a renewable energy project.

"Environmentally it's the right thing to do and cost wise it's the right thing to do because of sewer and water rates and where they're going," Conaty says.

The City of Binghamton is fully behind the new business, hoping its success could bring even more businesses to the area.

"It's something a lot of people will be able to use. They'll be able to see how some kind of green technology can work in a very practical setting and I think that's something that'll encourage more people to try to do green projects," says Binghamton Economic Development Director Merry Harris.

Conaty hopes car owners will give his green cleaning a try.

The new location of Wash at Joe's is expected to open by mid-September.
