Blue Angels Practice Performance

By WBNG News

A fly by here at WBNG shook our building with the sound.

Some of you may have also seen or heard the Blue Angels practice run for the Greater Binghamton Air Show.

Action News reporter Caitlin Nuclo spoke with the pilots about their high speed performance.

"It's a big thrill," said Blue Angels Commander Greg McWherter

A pilot's point of view on how it feels to fly a Blue Angels F-18 Jet.

The high speed performances are among the best in the air show industry.

Wowing crowds with their quick twists, turns and nose dives.

"It is fantastic, as much fun as the flying is, the most impressive part of the team, is the teamwork itself."

It's a team of about 30 service men and women.

And the work begins hours before flight.

Pilots say this crew starts the show.

"We prepare the jets in the morning, turn them on, make sure everything is good to go," said Giselle Serrano.

"When we actually start the jets up, they're going to see these crisp, professional hand movements," said McWherter

Important gestures that guide pilots on the ground.

And once they take off...

"We're going to go right in to the vertical and do some pretty amazing stuff," said Lieutenant Commander Paul Brantuas.

Before the Blue Angels can perform this weekend, they have to fly around the area, and map out landmarks.

So they know when and where to turn in this weekends show.

Traveling at about 600 miles per hour, these solo F-18's demonstrate the high performance and speed of the air craft.

A sneak peak of what you'll see at the Air Show, which will top off with the Blue Angels most famous formation, where all 6 jets will join together in flight.

"We are going to fly around as a Delta do some break out maneuvers," said Brantuas.

"We fly anywhere from 18 to 20 inches apart during most of the demonstration," said McWherter

An exciting demonstration that's sure to deliver a thrill.

The air show gets off the ground this Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4:30pm, at the Greater Binghamton Airport.

The Blue Angels will perform around 3:00 each afternoon.
