Smooth Sailing With Golden Knights

Some people think it's crazy to jump out of an airplane thousands of feet in the air.

But that's the job of the U.S. Army's Parachute Team, The Golden Knights.

Action News reporter Leigh Dana was along for the ride and watching as the Knights fell 13 thousand feet in a matter of seconds.

The Golden Knights have one last pow wow before gearing up for their next jump.

They've just finished practicing their stunt for the show and are now ready to buckle their seat belts for take off.

On this, a U.S. Army C 31 plane.

I'm on the plane, too.

This is my view.

I'm sitting right next to the exit where the paratroopers jump out of.
"It's like you put your hand out the window and you feel a lot of wind. That's how it feels. It's your whole body not just your hand," says Sergeant J.D. Beredis.

The plane reaches about 13 thousand feet in the air.

The temperature drops to about 30 degrees.

"The free fall goes pretty fast. It only takes 60 seconds for us to fall," says Beredis.

Sergeant Reese Pendleton says, "It's the most amazing feeling I've ever had. It's a life changing experience the first time you exit an aircraft and it'll change your prospective on things."

As our paratroopers are about to jump off the plane, I just want to point out that the Golden Knights were named the Golden Knight in 1962. Golden for the metals that they've won and Knights for all their descents.

But before they jump, a few signals are exchanged.

And a wind drift indicator test is performed.

"It lets us see what our canopies will be doing when we open them up. We throw them out at about 2000 feet which is about the altitude we open our parachutes," says Pendleton.

Never once are these brave men and women worried about their safety.

As for me, I was more worried about my lunch.

It was an amazing flight.

And though I didn't get to jump, they're right.

It was a life changing experience.

The paratroopers practice for two months before performing at shows.

During training they jump 6 to 8 times a day.
