New faces are touring Binghamton University's campus.

It's orientation month for freshman and transfer students.

As Action News Reporter Leigh Dana explains, there are a lot of anxious people ready start a new journey.

Hundreds of confused faces and their parents...

All trying to adjust from high school to college.

"At first I was a little nervous on the way here," says Ariel Arguesl.

"I kind of got a handle on it a little but I'm still a little nervous," comments Lauren Colantonio.

"It's really overwhelming right now, but I'm really excited," exclaims Nicole Safron.

Excited was the adjective used most to describe the first day of Freshman Orientation here at Binghamton University.

This year, there were 33 thousand freshman applicants for just two thousand spots.

Here at the campus fair, faculty and staff are helping students transition easily.

"The first thing is it's going to be alright. We're going to make sure that they get the classes that they need and graduate on time. So take a deep breath and take your time," says Campus Life's Miranda Souva.

It's one stop shopping for Arguesel.

"I've basically signed up for a bank account, a bucks account, talk to the people at the library, met some really cool people," said Arguesel.

And Nicole Safron is so engrossed with college life.... She's already talking about studying abroad.

"They have a 3 week trip to Ghana. You go over the summer and you still get credit. It's so cool."

In addition to the freshman class, 800 others are transfer students who are also going through this orientation.

That's a 25% increase from last year. The admissions office says it's partly due to the economy and partly due because some students are transferring from local community colleges to the University.

20%, one fifth, of the incoming freshman class are from out-of-state or international students.
