Chenango Forks Students Learn About Wetlands

Science classes spent the morning putting wetland plants into pots at Chanango Forks High School.
It's part of a project that includes planting new plants and grasses in a nearby swamp that's overgrown with the wrong type of weeds.
The plants were brought to the school by the National Aquarium in Baltimore.
It's mission is to restore plant habitat in the Susquehanna River Basin.
The Aquarium says a good place to start, is with students.
"We tend to drain wetlands to build buildings, and put up new shopping malls, so they need to know why it's important to conserve these particular habitats, so if we get them involved now, hopefully the goal is they'll continue to be involved."
"It's not just us, it's our whole school is getting involved, so I think we will be able to make a difference." said Sarah Andrus

The students will monitor the plants until next spring, when they'll plant them in the swamp on the Chenango Forks School's Campus.
