New NY Regulations For Natural Gas Drilling I

By WBNG News

Tapping into New York's natural gas could come with new regulations.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation released its draft recommendations.

Before companies drill they must:

Disclose all chemicals used in the fracturing process..

Provide an extensive plan on how they will deal with frack water and set up a system to track its removal.

Test private water wells within a thousand feet of drilling sites, and continue to monitor them during the drilling process.

And prepare mitigation plans for greenhouse gas, visual and noise impact of drilling, and plans to coordinate traffic and staging equipment.

Companies must obey protocols set by the Susqueyhanna River Basin Commissions if withdrawing water from the Susquehanna and Delaware Rivers.

Companies storing waste water on-site must use steel tanks to protect the environment.

If they use a centralized storage unit to serve multiple sites, they must use a double-liner system similar to those used at landfills.

And additional permits are required for storm water control and industrial activities.

The DEC public comment period ends November 30th.
