Have a Happy, And Safe, Halloween

By WBNG News

Kids will soon be traveling the streets in search of treats.

Action News Reporter Caitlin Nuclo caught up with parents and local law enforcement.

And has some tips to keep your little jack-o-lanterns safe this Halloween.

"Check your candy before you touch it and look before you cross the road"

Good advice from 13-year-old Ryan Gorton on the Eve of Halloween.

And parents are hoping their kids keep some safety tips in mind while they trick or treat.

"Don't talk to strangers stay close to mom and dad, hold our hand," said Shenelle Parker of Endicott.

Sheriff David Harder urges families to map out their route ahead of time.

"Check out that neighborhood before you get there go on our website so you can see where sex offenders live, so you know which houses to avoid or which neighborhoods to go, that's the biggest thing," said Harder.

Parents can plug in a location, and the "Sex Offender Watch" will show you where offenders live in relation to the address.

So you can steer clear of potentially unsafe houses.

"You never know what's going to happen out there, you got to be careful," said Bert Proper of Binghamton.

As your kids collect bags full of candy.

Remember when in doubt, throw it out.

"Check your child's candy when they get home, make sure it's in it's original wrapper and that it doesn't look like it's been tampered with," said Diane O'Hora of the Broome County Health Department.

Ryan and Cheyenne are scouring the store for a last minute costume.

If your kids wear a mask, make sure it doesn't obstruct their vision and they can breathe easy.

Bright colors are often the safest fashion for night.

Those wearing dark costumes should sport reflective tape and flashlights so drivers can spot them.

Parents should also beware that some towns and villages have curfews.

"We're also putting extra patrols out and the heavy areas where we do have problems with the halloweeners," said O'Hora.

So the spooky holiday, can be a safe one.
