The sentence came yesterday in Chemung County Court.
Prosecutors say 35 year-old Lee Doane stabbed 46 year-old Susan Mitchell multiple times in July of this year.
He plead guilty in October.
The District Attorney's Office expects Doane to spend more time in prison than the minimum requirement.
He has a long history of violent offenses.
Doane was convicted for robbery, burglary twice, and a number of other crimes.
