Deciding Dissolution in Johnson City

By WBNG News

Voters are deciding the future of Johnson City.

The ballot asks if the 117 year old village should dissolve into the Town of Union.

Action News Reporter Reed Buterbaugh is live at the Johnson City Central School polling station, where turnout has been high all day.

Turnout has been steady throughout the day at the village's eight polling sites.

The dissolution plan calls for tax savings of up to 26 percent, something many say is too good to pass up.

"I think it's gonna benefit all of us at the end"

"Times change, the money is not there," said Brian Lovejoy of Johnson City. "I voted yes to dissolve because the taxes just can't keep rising."

28 Village jobs will be eliminated.

However, police and fire districts would be formed and many current employees could be hired.

The Broome County Sheriffs Department would be responsible for public safety.

The plan calls for other shared and consolidated services something that appeals to many voters.

"Duplication of services all kinds of things that are good for us not to have to do and pay for and they'll be taken care of by the rest. We're not going to lose anything what so ever," said Steven Sweetland of Johnson City.

Those opposed to the plan say they question how long the tax decrease will last.

And there are too many unknowns to do something so final.

"I voted no because I don't think they've got enough stuff figured out on this thing do we really want the Town of Union telling us what do? It's our own mess let us clean it up," said Robert Conrad of Johnson City.

"I voted no because it's the dumbest idea I've ever heard. I didn't see dissolution to any problems saved by dissolution they have to do it another way," said Bob Sents of Johnson City.

For many people who have lived in the village their whole lives, no savings is worth the lose of their community's identity.

"I just don't want it to change. I'm happy with where I am and having it the village of Johnson City," said Bert Edmunds of Johnson City.

The proposition that people voted on simplified the complicated dissolution proposal to less than 200 words.

The board of elections said a more lengthy description for voters at every polling site would be provided by the village.

But the four stations I visited had none.

The board of elections says it does not know why the village did not offer the full version to voters.
