Tioga County Voters Still Using Lever Machines

By WBNG News

Most voters in Tioga County are still using old voting machines, even when electronic machines are available at all polling sites.

Here at Owego Elementary, many voters preferred pulling the lever to cast their vote today.

The Board of Elections says that's because voters feel comfortable using them.

However, each of the county's 18 polling sites are equipped with new electronic machines for the disabled.

But any voter who chooses to use it could.

The county is piloting a program in Newark Valley and Richford to test the new machines.

"We are going to try a new system and before we expose it to the entire county, We want to make sure what we're doing is correct," says Board of Elections Commissioner, Cinda Goodrich.

The Board of Elections also says New York State has not yet certified most of the county's electronic machines.

But the ones used today were certified.
