New Home For Veterans in Oxford

By WBNG News

Hundreds of veterans in Chenango County have a new place to live.

Today, they moved into the new Veterans Home in Oxford.

Action News reporter Gabe Osterhout takes us inside and tells us how some local college students helped make the move a comfortable one.

It's out of the old, and into the new.

More than 240 veterans moved just a few feet to a brand new 71 million dollar veterans' home in Oxford.

And nearly 60 students from Broome Community College's Psychology and Human Services program were on hand to make the move easier.

"There's a lot going on and these people don't really know what's going on. They're confused so we're trying to bring a little peace into the situation," says student Debbie Flanagan.

The new facility has 237 individual rooms.

It features wider hallways and doorways.

Also open dining areas, a library, lounge areas and open activity areas.

And a bathing area.

Residents were moved to the new facility, after their new rooms are set up.

"A lot of people get set in their ways and it's a shock to their system and having someone that's able to talk to them, relate to them as a veteran and just be there with them and help them transition through this process if very great deal of comfort for them," says B.C.C. student Richard Russell.

Students say the biggest thing about the new home is it shows that people still care about the veterans.

And it's a learning experience for the students as well.

"It's to let the students know that there's a world beyond their world and for the individuals here to know they are not forgotten and this beautiful facility is one way our country can give a contribution to them," says B.C.C. professor Francis Battisti.

A way to say thank you to those who were willing to sacrifice for our country.

The New York State Department of Health recommends the old facility be torn down.

It expects demolition in the Spring of 2010.

The demolished building will make room for gardens and space for outside activities.
