Waiting on Dissolution Decision in Johnson City

By WBNG News

The uncertainty left by election day is another wrinkle in the divisive issue of whether to dissolve the village of Johnson City.

Action News reporter Reed Buterbaugh tells us people on both sides are not looking forward to the wait.

Walter Pichura supports dissolution but did not vote Tuesday.

"It was kind of interesting to see that there was one vote and mine hadn't been counted and so it's not a virtual tie but an actual tie," Pichura said.

Pichura voted by absentee because he was working at a polling station on election day.

With nearly 43-hundred ballots scanned, the vote to keep the village intact is just a single vote ahead of the option to dissolving it.

Johnson City voters say they knew it would be close, but not this close.

"It's been four years now and we're down to just a couple of days I thought it would be resolved yesterday and we just have to wait and see now," said Kathy Furch.

222 absentee and an unknown amount of affidavit ballots will decide the village's future.

"If only one or two or a dozen people more had gotten out to actually vote yes I would be thrilled," Furch said.

"A lot of people have been here, they want to keep the village, they don't want to keep the village, and we're all on pins and needles," said Nancy Shatara.

For those who campaigned on both sides of the issue, this too close to call situation is nerve racking.

"It's not a good feeling," said Julie Deemie of Johnson City. "It's just waiting and wondering. It's hard."

Deemie, who is against dissolution, says she's pessimistic about the outcome

She believes it could come down to how many college students voted absentee, and where their families stand on dissolving.
