An honorary member of the New York Yankees cheered the team to its World Series win from Tioga County.

Yankees won their 27th title, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 4 games to 2.

Early in the season we followed Candor teacher Polly Tompkins to the stadium for a special visit with the team.

Action News reporter Gabe Osterhout tell us how their win parallels her personal battle with cancer.

Polly Tompkins of Candor didn't sleep much after the Yankees' win last night.

Tompkins is battling breast cancer.

And last May she won a contest to be the honorary bat girl for the team.

During her trip to Yankee Stadium, she took the lineup card to home plate and threw out the first pitch.

And she felt like part of the team.

"The connection that I have or had with the Yankees is something that's going to stick with me for the rest of my life. It has been a key point to my journey and my recovery," Tompkins says.

During a doctors appointment in September, Tompkins learned nearly all of her 30 tumors were gone.

Doctors took her off of one form of chemotherapy.

She's now back at work, teaching first grade students at Candor Elementary school.

"The love and support I've gotten from Yankees as well as my family and friends, it's working. It's been great," says Tompkins.

This year has had it's ups and downs for both Tompkins, and the Yankees as well.

Thursday morning, a colleague of Tompkins said her year is going to mirror the team.

"The Yankees won, you're going to win. It's so true. I'm...one way or another, they're winners obviously but I'm going to beat this...I'm already a winner," she says.

A winner with a winning supporting cast.

From family and friends to the World Series champions, everyone is rooting for Polly.

Tompkins says since her trip, she has kept in contact with some of the players including Joba Chamberlin and Nick Swisher.
