Binghamton Zoo Awarded For Accreditation

By WBNG News

The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park wins back its accreditation.

The Executive Director of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums was in town.

She toured of the facility and recognized the zoo for its achievements.

Ross Park is now one of more than 200, zoo's in the US to have this distinction.

It means the zoo meets the highest standards of conservation and education.

"It's a major milestone and we're very proud to have them as a member and it shows the will and commitment of the community and we want that will and commitment to continue so the zoo here can maintain its membership," said Executive Director Kris Vehrs.

The zoo lost accreditation back in 2005.

Having it back means it can now participate in new programs, retain qualified staff and potentially bring in some new, endangered animals.

The zoo's accreditation lasts 5 years.
