DEP Keeping Tabs on Cabot Gas Drilling in Susquehanna County

By WBNG News

Multiple spills and water well pollution have become major issues at a gas drilling site in Susquehanna County.

Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection is working to force the natural gas company to get it together.

Action News Reporter Leigh Dana reports.

Just last month, Pennsylvania fined Cabot Oil and Gas Corporation $56,000 for 3 separate spills in Dimock Township.

Cabot had to stop its hydro-fracking process until it came up with a pollution prevention and contingency plan.

Now, the DEP has fined Cabot again.

This time for polluting 13 nearby water wells with Methane.

The Department of Environmental Protection is ordering Cabot to pay a fine of $120,000.

The investigation began last January after a water well exploded at a home near the company's site.

The DEP also entered into a legally binding contract with Cabot.

It states the company must now develop a plan to permanently restore or replace the affected water supplies and make sure there are no further leaks.

"This establishes a frame work so that the residents can be assured that their safety and health and the protection of the environment is occurring," said Ken Komoroski with Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation.

The DEP says if Cabot doesn't comply it can take stronger action.

"There have been times when we have encountered just a very, very few companies that have not been cooperating and we have entered into legal action that now prohibits them from doing business in Pennsylvania," said Freta Tarbell with Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

The DEP says for now, that's not likely for Cabot.

Drilling is now on hold pending DEP approval of the company's well casing and cementing plans.

Cabot Drilling is also on hold in New York.

The company says it doesn't plan on bringing it's business into New York due to the uncertainty of the industry's future in the state.
